Unspoken Words - The Capital

Unspoken Words - The Capital is the story about believing in something that doesn’t have to be said out loud. A mantra, a promise or a pact spanning across world cultures, religions and continents. The Capital could be a big city or the big letters to emphasize something important.

I once again went on a journey, this time to Dubai for business expecting nothing more than lots of marble, steel and gold in a daze of air conditioning. With the working title ”Unspoken Words” for my next collection in mind and while presenting my previous work at a jewellery exhibition, I had a chance encounter with a noble gentleman from Saudi Arabia. While talking about jewellery and my sources of inspiration our conversation slowly became more spiritual and philosophical.

When explaining him about my vision of making a wearable jewellery case - where you could place a goal for life or a love declaration - a pact between people, seal it and keep it close to your heart - he challenged me by telling me about letters and signs in holy books that are not possible to pronounce. They are more of a sound and represent a feeling or state of mind. We suddenly felt united and captured with a similar belief. The belief that things left unvoiced is a gift to mankind and humanity. Words can be limiting. Unspoken words can be a treasure.

The collection, launched in Spring 2017, reflects a modernized version of the traditional Arabian style language. The expected ornamentation is replaced with a Nordic simplicity created by mobile pieces - some lively, others more mechanical.

Traditional Middle Eastern symbols as the moon, star and the kite shape from the art of calligraphy are transformed into a wide range of yellow gold pieces with a touch of pearls, enamel, transparent precious stones and individual inscriptions. Other modern symbols that speak their own language combined with letters all turned into charms expressing a feeling of unity.
